I can’t really explain why, but there’s something magical about a cozy mystery set in Ireland. Maybe it’s the rolling green hills, the quaint villages where everyone knows everyone, or the sense that ancient secrets linger just beneath the surface.
I suppose it's the combination of all of these that draws me to Ireland-based cozies. In general, the authors excel at creating mysteries filled with rich atmosphere and engaging detail. And it just so happens that every one of the cozy series I’ve listed below features a strong female lead, often a woman from some faraway place who arrives in Ireland and becomes an amateur sleuth.
So, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, here are six cozy mystery series set in Ireland that will transport you straight to the heart of the Emerald Isle and right into a gripping mystery. No passport required.
Irish Village Mystery Series by Carlene O’Connor
12 books in the series
Set in the picturesque village of Kilbane in County Cork, this beloved cozy series follows Siobhán O’Sullivan, a young woman who runs her family’s bistro alongside her five siblings after the tragic loss of their parents. She expects a quiet life full of baking and gossip, but instead she finds murder, again and again. Her challenge throughout the series is balancing family responsibilities with her growing reputation as an amateur sleuth.
I admit that I’ve only read Murder in an Irish Village and Murder at an Irish Wedding so far, but I plan to read more. So many of the cozy mystery readers I follow rave about them. I really love how smart, persistent, and perfectly imperfect Siobhán is, and I’m enjoying getting to know the rest of the family and other recurring characters, too. I also appreciate the level of detail. It helps me clearly imagine what it would be like to be there. Complex plots, an array of suspects, and unexpected twists just make these books even better.
County Cork Mystery Series by Sheila Connolly
8 books in the series
In this series, Boston native Maura Donovan travels to rural Ireland to fulfill her late grandmother’s final wish. Buried in a Bog, the first in the series, follows Maura as she takes a sentimental journey back to the home country, where she promptly gets tangled up in a murder investigation. Despite more dead bodies showing up in every book (the way they always do), Maura is hooked on her new life and remains.
Thinking about the two or three books in the series that I’ve read, I really appreciate the way the author combines past and present, often tying historical events to the modern crimes. The Irish folklore, culture, and customs are fascinating. These factors, along with strong plots, bring depth to this contemporary mystery series.
Dublin Driver Mystery Series by Catie Murphy
6 books in the series
Giving us a more urban take on Irish cozies, this cozy mystery series features Megan Malone, an American Army veteran turned limo driver in Dublin. Her job ferrying tourists often presents her with secrets to uncover and mysteries to solve. Set in Dublin rather than a charming small town or village, these mysteries seem a little edgier and faster paced.
I absolutely love Megan’s sidekicks—her adorable Jack Russell puppies—but then I’m kind of a sucker for animal companions. They’re one of many factors that give these books heart and humor along with the suspense.

Gethsemane Brown Series by Alexia Gordon
5 books in the series
For those of us who like our cozies served with a side of spooky, this paranormal cozy series is perfect. American classical musician Gethsemane Brown relocates to the Irish countryside, where she moves into a charming little cottage, unaware that it’s already occupied… by a ghost. Figuring out if he’s guilty or innocent of murder is just the first of many puzzles to solve.
I actually just read Murder in G Major, the first in the series, and I can’t wait to read more. The author has created a fresh take on cozies with wit and humor, and there are some truly funny moments in this one. Distinctive, well-developed characters and snappy dialogue add to the fun.
Castle Tours of Ireland Series by Penny Brooke
4 books in the series
Although this is yet another mystery series about a young woman, Annabelle Shannon, relocating to Ireland, the author has still carved out her own niche. Annabelle has returned to Ireland to help her grandmother run tours of historic castles, so we come at this familiar trope from a fresh angle that explores the travel business. As Annabelle settles into her role, she repeatedly finds herself uncovering secrets hidden within Ireland’s most beautiful—not to mention haunted—landmarks.
One of the things I like best here is the strong grandmother-granddaughter relationship. It brings some emotional depth to these classic, closed-loop whodunits set in compelling, atmospheric locations. Who doesn’t love a good castle story?
Irish Castle Mystery Series by Ellie Brannigan
3 books in the series
Finally, this relatively new series follows L.A. bridal designer Rayne McGrath, who has unexpectedly inherited a crumbling Irish castle. (Another transplant!) It’s a far cry from her glamorous life on Rodeo Drive, yet she’s compelled to restore the estate and keep it running. After all, the residents of the surrounding village rely on it for their livelihood.
Although this is yet another cozy series about a fish-out-of-water heroine who inherits property in Ireland, I still think these books offer some originality. The mysteries are complicated and feature surprise endings. They also include some deeper themes, such as legacy, responsibility, reinvention, and restoration. I must confess that I don’t always like Rayne and some of the other personalities, but I appreciate the more realistic approach to characters, warts and all.
Grab An Irish Brew
Whether you prefer quaint villages, dramatic coastlines, haunted cottages, or bustling city streets, these Irish-set cozy mysteries offer something for every mystery fan. Each series delivers that perfect blend of charm, intrigue, and atmosphere, where the setting feels like another fascinating character in the story. So, pour yourself a Guinness or brew a cup of Irish Breakfast tea, settle into your reading nook, and let Ireland’s most delightfully deadly stories take you away.
