Oh, how I love the Gilded Age! It was a time of glittering wealth, social ambition, and shocking inequality. It was an era defined by lavish mansions, opulent balls, and larger-than-life personalities, particularly among New York’s elite families like the Vanderbilts and Astors. Known in France as the Belle Époque and in Britain as the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, this period captured my imagination when I was researching Sargent’s Deadly Commission. Glamour, scandal, and intrigue make it the perfect backdrop for a compelling cozy mystery.

So, if you love historical settings rich with detail, social drama, and just a touch of danger, these six Gilded Age cozy mystery series are well worth exploring.

The Gilded Newport Mysteries by Alyssa Maxwell

14 books in the series

Set in Newport, Rhode Island beginning in 1895, this cozy series follows reporter Emmaline Cross as she navigates the scandals and secrets of the Vanderbilt-era elite. In the first book, what begins as a simple society-page assignment quickly turns into something far more dangerous when Emma witnesses a murder at a glamorous ball at the Breakers. With her own brother accused of the crime, she dives headfirst into the investigation, uncovering a tangled web of wealth, power, and deception. As the series continues, Emma is repeatedly drawn into mysteries involving high society, including disappearances, forced marriages, and deadly secrets hidden behind the façade of luxury.

I really connected with Emma. She’s determined, strong-willed, and refuses to accept the limitations placed on women of her time. The series also offers great plotting, vivid settings, and plenty of twists, along with an intriguing hint of romance.

Gilded Age Mystery Series by Rosemary Simpson

10 books in the series

Beginning with What the Dead Leave Behind, this historical mystery series immerses readers in late nineteenth-century New York City, where heiress Prudence MacKenzie teams up with former Pinkerton agent Geoffrey Hunter to investigate suspicious deaths. From the devastation of the Great Blizzard of 1888 to the dangers lurking within Fifth Avenue mansions, the series explores both the glittering highs and the grim realities of the era. The mysteries often delve into deeply personal and emotional territory, including inheritance disputes, hidden identities, and the vulnerabilities faced by women in this time period.

I found these books incredibly suspenseful—true page-turners that kept me on edge of my seat and eager to see what would happen next.

The Notebook Mysteries by Kimberly Mullins

7 books in series

Set in 1881 Chicago, this series follows sixteen-year-old Emma, who dreams of more than working in her family’s bakery. When she begins making deliveries, her sharp observations draw her into a series of increasingly dangerous mysteries involving theft, murder, and family secrets. Emma records everything in her notebooks, and those observations become key to solving the cases. Written for a younger audience than the other cozy mystery series for adults on this list, the series is charming, fast-paced, and full of engaging characters.

Despite her young age, I found Emma incredibly relatable. Like most teens still in the process of maturing, she makes questionable decisions at times, which only makes her feel more real. The quirky supporting cast and surprising twists make the series a thoroughly enjoyable read.

The Old Los Angeles Mysteries by Anne Louise Bannon

6 books in the series

Set in 1870s Los Angeles—an unusual and refreshing setting for this time period—this series follows Maddie Wilcox, a widow, winemaker, and secretly trained physician who finds herself drawn into murder investigations. The stories are deeply rooted in the historical realities of early Los Angeles, including issues of corruption, water rights, and social inequality.

Maddie is a fascinating character to me. She’s gritty, independent, and unafraid to challenge societal expectations, even when it puts her at risk. I especially appreciated how well-researched the series is, offering an authentic and immersive look at a lesser-explored aspect of the Gilded Age.

The Gaslight Mysteries by Victoria Thompson

5 books in the series

Set in 1890s New York City, this series blends historical detail with compelling mystery. While it leans slightly more toward traditional historical mystery than other books in the cozy genre, it offers a rich depiction of life in the late nineteenth century, from the streets of Manhattan to the complexities of social class and gender roles.

What I like is the way the stories weave in fascinating historical details that actively shape the mystery, rather than simply serving as background. I especially appreciated how the suspense builds and how the culprit is never obvious.

The Newport Gilded Age Mysteries by Shelley Freydont

2 books in the series

This series also takes place in Newport during the height of the Gilded Age, but with a slightly different perspective. Deanna Randolph is a young woman navigating her first social season, where expectations of marriage and propriety clash with her desire for independence. When a murder disrupts the glittering world of balls, seaside gatherings, and fashionable “cottages,” Deanna teams up with her maid and a former suitor to uncover the truth. Along the way, she pushes against the constraints of high society by joining bicycling clubs, befriending actresses, and embracing a more modern outlook.

I really enjoyed how vividly these books bring the period to life, and Deanna is a fun, gutsy heroine who feels far ahead of her time.

Mysterious Stories of the Gilded Age

The Gilded Age is the perfect setting for cozy mysteries—a world of dazzling wealth and rigid social rules hiding secrets just beneath the surface. Whether you’re exploring Newport’s grand mansions, New York’s bustling streets, or even the early days of Los Angeles, these stories combine history, intrigue, and unforgettable characters.
